The row that surprises people is the first two: the evening departures are the cheaper half. That is not a quality signal, it is what is in the fare. A daytime coach carries a wildlife park, a lunch and a dune run, and those cost money.

Evening departures: what you are buying

The light and the sky. You arrive as the sun drops, get one and three-quarter to two hours among the pillars with shadows longer than the stones, eat dinner cooked in the field, and look through a telescope on three of the four. You get home late.

Daytime departures: what you are buying

Everything else. The two daytime coaches carry a wildlife park with koalas and hand-fed kangaroos, a fish-and-chips or seafood lunch, a four-wheel-drive run and sandboarding at Lancelin, and the Discovery Centre while it is open. They are the fuller day and the longer one.

What you give up is the light. Midday on a sand plain is flat, and in summer it is hot with no shade at all. One January traveller had their stop cut to quick photographs by the temperature.

Private days: what you are buying

Control, and it is worth more here than on most attractions. Every shared departure allows one to two hours in the field; a private day lets you decide, and one of them says so in its own fare. It is also the only format that can do the Discovery Centre and the sunset in the same day.

Seven travellers is roughly where it flips, and above that the private vehicle is both cheaper and better. Below it you are paying for the flexibility rather than saving money, which may still be the right call.

The scenic flight: who is it actually for?

Short-stay visitors, and people who do not want four hours in a vehicle. It flies you north from Jandakot rather than driving, gives you two hours on the ground with a guide, then flies on to Rottnest Island for four hours. At $804 a head with a two-passenger minimum it is the most expensive way to see the field.

It is also the only one that shows you the coast from the air, and the only day that pairs the desert with Rottnest. Treat it as a Western Australia highlights day that includes the Pinnacles rather than as a Pinnacles tour.

The multi-day option, and its honest place

One seven-day coastal loop in this set treats the desert as the first stop on day one, with three hours there before continuing to Kalbarri, Monkey Mia, Coral Bay, Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range. Six nights, most meals and every park fee are in the fare.

Nobody should book it for the Pinnacles. Book it for the coast and enjoy the three hours at the pillars as an opening. Note also that it is the one departure here that asks for six days’ notice for a refund rather than twenty-four hours.
